Im trying to make a "vintage" computer out of a arduino and MS-DOS seems like a good operating sistem for a arduino since it doesnt need that much processing power or ram. You came up with a stupid idea, have it spelled out to you why it won't work, but you don't understand the explanations.
At your level, you just need to take it on faith, then, that no means no. If you want to run a dos emu on a SOC and underutilize the capabilities of that chip for some inane reason, get a Pi. Example: an array in SRAM is updated with analog input readings. Quote from: Spyrotech on Aug 26,am. Amateur radio sinceapproximately.
Live in Central Oregon desert. Harvard architecture has separate data and instruction busses, allowing transfers to be performed simultaneously on both busses. A von Neumann architecture has only one bus which is used for both data transfers and instruction fetches, and therefore data transfers and instruction fetches must be scheduled - they can not be performed at the same time.Forget PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, maker gamers build their own gaming consoles.
If you love retro games as much as we do, these projects are definitely worth checking out. Like many Arduino and Raspberry Pi hobby projects, these are all relatively affordable, not that hard to make, and are a lot of fun to build.
But, more importantly, the end result is a treat! Get one of these babies up and running and you get to take a trip down memory lane, with your favorite games from old-school systems like Atari, Neo Geo, Game Boy and many more. Deploying the Raspbian OSRetroPie boots you directly to the emulators so you can enjoy virtually any game from your childhood days.
Check out the vid below for all the details:. PortaBerry Pi is a Raspberry Pi powered handheld gaming console. This project is a little bit more complex and requires some technical knowledge, including 3D printing skills.
But, wow, is it pretty or what! The console also includes 2 speakers and a headphone jack to enjoy gaming on-the-go. PortaBerry Pi also runs on RetroPie. You can find the list of required materials with links here. Check out the Imgur gallery for the full walkthrough and grab the ready-to-print 3D Thing files here.
It is recommended you use a 3D printed case, but if you put your brain to work, maybe you could craft your own case with wood or something else? His BMO gaming console is one of our favorites. Yeah, neither do we. Instructables user rbates4 has designed this awesome portable arcade cabinet with nothing but a Raspberry Pi, some plywood, a pair of speakers and a 5v 2A power supply. It was designed to be put together like a LEGO set to make a retro gaming handheld console.
The manual includes the full list of components you need for the project with step-by-step instructions. Okay MAME cabbers, this one takes the cake, in our humble opinion. This guy found the perfect way to put his old, broken up game cabinet to good use by powering it up with a Raspberry Pi.
You can check out instructions here. And be sure to come back and let us know how it goes. Or you can hack your old GameBoy to run more great games with Raspberry Pi.
This tiny Arduino-based gaming console has already been put together for you. The powerful specs of the latest Raspberry Pi 2 has even enabled the device to run high-end emulators like PlayStation and Nintendo 64, bringing sweet games with 3D graphics to Raspberry Pi powered gaming machines.
These are some of the latest creations made by various developers. Now I will show how to build the same computer, but with the output signal in color for a VGA monitor! You can input the variables and the BASIC program with a PS2 keyboard, and it generates the output for a VGA monitor with a text resolution of 24 columns x 10 rows of 5x6 pixels characters, in four colors. You can see it in action in the upper video.
This project can also be used to print simple text messages on the monitor, as shown in the third picture in this page. It also control a PS2 keyboard. The idea to use one or more Arduino to create an old style PC running a dialect of Basic is not new but, as far as I know, none of them has a color output.
Furthermore in many of these projects special shields or hardware has to be build. Here you need just two Arduino, few resistors and the connector for the PS2 keyboard and the monitor, as shown in the above pictures. First download it from the Arduino official web page. If you have a newer versions on your PC, the best is to download it in.
Click this link to download the Windows version. You need then the PS2keyboard library. You can find it at the bottom of this page. Just uncompress it and copy the PS2keyboard folder in: arduino This is a variation of the standard TinyBasic Plus where i have added the PS2 library and modified the code to accept the variables from it. More details on TiniBasic Plus and tutorials can be found at this link. If there are no problems, and compatibility issues, Tiny Basic is already running.
You can test it trough a serial monitor in your PC. Here you can already test some program in Basic just by typing them with your PC keyboard NB later on I will show how to connect the PS2 keyboard directly to the Arduino.
I got all the informations and library from this Instructable. I got an old PS2 female connector from a broken PC motherboard. You can simply unsold it with a heat gun. In the picture shown in this step, you can find the function of the needed pins of the PS2 connector.
The easiest way is to copy it in the Arduino software subfolder named "libraries", to be immediately recognized. A warning for low available memory is normal.
If you do not have other errors everything is ok and you can immediately start to build your own 8-bit PC. The schematic is reported at the top of this step.Add the following snippet to your HTML:. Brought to the marked inZilog's Z80 was the most widespread processor in the '80s until the s.
Let's bring it to life again! One day when I tidied up my cellar, I found a Z80 chip from an old computer. In the '80s and '90s, this processor was very popular, and I dare to say the most popular processor ever. So I got the idea to breathe new life into it. It has only the raw core functionality of every Processor, which is to make basic calculations on some bits and bytes.
This is just an academical fun project without any practical relevance, but it teaches you how microprocessors still work in detail! Please log in or sign up to comment. The oldie but goodie returns in the form of the infrared joystick set from an old Atari game system.

What is a good kit to learn about retro-computing? I know this isn't an Arduino question really, but I can't find a good place to ask it.
I'm interested in learning how computers work, on a really low level. I got a raspberry pi but a while back, but want to know more about the hardware side of things - even diving into how a CPU works inside. I heard about people making their own 8 bit computers in the 80s I was born in the mid 90s and am intrigued by this.
It seems to be a way to really learn how a computer works in its entirety. I'm a freshmen CE student, so I understand a good amount of digital logic and such, but want to learn about this on my own as the classes that cover it I won't take for at least a year, and use FPGAs to implement many designs. Unfortunately I don't have time to design and route a PCB, so I was wondering if there is a good kit out there?
