Yesterday the internet was buzzing with speculation over a render of a PCB that called itself the SP We made some not outrageous assumptions that it was probably Behringer and was something to do with the Emu SP sampler. He also discounts Akai but would neither confirm or deny it when asked about Rossum Electro-Music.
It will also handle variable sample rates. The filters will be analogue and it will be built from aluminium and high-quality parts. You can feel the disappointment creep in as we see the hopes of Behringer level pricing evaporate. So is Ken for real or is this a very cynical attempt to jump onto some self-promotion for a new sample pack? See for yourself in the video below. Not sure why it needs to be quite so secretive — but I guess this is the way of viral marketing.

I remember someone did a mockup pic of a Roland MV No such beast planned or started as far as I know. A lot more faith in Behringer to do an SP than Roland to do anything their customers want though.

If it's not much more than an SP clone then I wouldn't care much. If it's a new unique sampling and sequencing goove box with live FX then I'm really curious!

After they introduced the Crave Synthesizer in January, it was quiet around the company. This also Behringer possible thought. Our friends of matrixsynth. I can not confirm the truth of this information, but it seems that Behringer is working on a clone of the iconic E-Mu SP sampler.
What is clear: it would be a modern version without floppy disks but with USB and possible internal memory. Whether the published image on Matrixsynth. There is currently no information from Uli on the Behringer Facebook page or Gearslutz.

The new SP undertaking comes from E-mu Systems co-founder Dave Rossum, so we can think of this as passion project more than anything. There are other rebuilders out there, so you might want to comparison shop if this is something you really want to do. Also, anyone want to take bets on when we get a Behringer BS? I accept. But the SP in preorder still hope to bank off the renown of one of the most popular samplers ever, the genre-defining E-mu SP All of this could be a test of the clone craze. Sure, bit lo-fi sound has some real potential for music making. And the E-mu layout, with faders and pads, is accessible.
All of those can be had right now, without dropping hundreds of bucks in June to get something that could take until January or longer. Not to mention we may see a Behringer take on this idea shortly, knowing how that company follows social media. In a way, then, these sorts of reboots are beginning to become like the remakes of classic cars — a sort of genre all their own.
The main remaining question, then, is how authentic a recreation this is. The E-mu sounds the way that it does not just because of the bit- and sample rate, but the filters and signal path.
The real draw here is probably that this actually samples — including a looper mode. I just hope that new ideas get as much attention as reboots of old ones.
