Saundatti is an ancient town which was the first capital of the Ratta dynasty. The Yellamma Temple attracts people from all over Karnataka and neighboring states. During the Yellamma Jatre, especially the one held during the month of Margasira, the number of attendees normally crosses 10 lakhs. The Jatre is also known for the practice of dedicating girls to the Devadasi system.
Originally, these girls were supposed to devote their life to following the arts of song and dance for the temple god. Later, these girls led the life of concubines to the local rich.
Still later, their life degenerated to becoming prostitutes. This practice has been officially banned. But the Yellamma Jatre is more about the celebration of the power of women in the form of Shakti. During this Jatre, an idol of Yellamma Devi is taken out in procession and she is worshipped as Goddess Shakti. People from Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa gather here in huge numbers to witness the Jatre and worship Yellamma Devi. Yellamma Devi is associated with Renuka, the wife of Jamadhagni and the mother of Parashurama, whose story is told in the Puranas.

Then saint became furious and called cursed the sun god to loose his glory and become a diminished star. Sun reminded saint about the sin he committed and cursed the saint that he will be killed by a King. Then saint Naradha came and pacified both of them and mitigated their curses that Sun will be attacked by Rahu and Ketu once in a year and loose his glory and king will be eventually killed by a king but his son would protect him.
Sun also blesses Umbrella or Chathra and Chappal or Padhuka to mankind to protect them from his intense heat during summer the first umbrella and Padhuka to mankind. After that Renuka and Saint were living happily in a hermitage near Kundalipuram of current Tamilnadu. Parashuram was a powerful victor who mastered all the sciences. By her devotion towards her husband and her idealness Renuka was capable of making pots out of dry sand. She daily makes a fresh pot with sand at river bed and used to carry it on her head by balancing with a black cobra. One fine morning when Renuka was on her way to river to bring water by means of sandpots. After making pots she stepped into the river for filling water into the pot. In water she found the shadow of Gandharva couple engaged in sensual play.
Renuka upon seeing this, lost concentration and sandpot on her head was broke. She tried to make new pot but sand becoming heaps and she was unable to complete that. She came to know about the reason about these things and went to hermitage with empty hands.Renuka Devi was a princess and married to a powerful sage named Jamadagni. She had five sons, including Parasurama the 6 th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. With her devotion to her husband and chastity, she gained the power to create a new pot everyday with sand and carried water in it, to her husband for his prayers.
She twisted the available snake and kept on it her head to support the pot. One day, when Renuka went to a river to fetch water, she was attracted to a Gandharva and lost her power of making the sand pot.
Knowing this, the furious Jamadagni fired out Renuka. She went into a thick forest and started to meditate.

When Eknath and Joginath appeared in front of her, she asked for advice to calm down her husband. As imagined, Jamadagni was angry and ordered his sons to cut her head, despite her perfect purifications. When they refused, he burnt them into ashes.
Parasurama, who was not on the scene, came to know about this and he behead his mother for her infidelity. Another story says that when Parasurama tried to behead his mother, she escaped into a low- caste locale. However, Parasurama found her and while slashing her head, he killed a low-caste woman, who tried to protect her.
When they came alive, Renukas head was attached to the other woman and vice versa. Since Jamadagni accepted the body of Renuka with the head of other woman, Renuka remained there as a Goddess and is being worshipped by the low-caste people as Yellamma.
It is also believed that Parasuram took rival against the King Sahastrarjuna, who killed Jamadagni and Renuka for the Kamadhenu, the divine cow. When God Dattatreya tried to retrieve their life, Parashuram turned back to see his mother that Renuka Mata stayed on the place to favor her devotees.
Hrishi sage Jamadagni was the son of Ruchik Muni and Satyavathi and had obtained the blessings of the gods by performing severe penance. Aai Renuka is the mother of Parashuram. Parshuram after getting the orders for the father cut the head of his mother and then started crying and scrumbling on the ground Since Renuka was agreat Sati she came in the nightmare and told Parshuram to carry out the postdeath rituals in the guidance of Shi Gurudav Datta hence Parshuram carried deadbody of his mother to this place here in the Guidance of Shri Gurudev he carried out the rituals.

It is located at Tuljapur District Osmanabad in Maharashra. It is family godess kuldaivata of many families in Maharashtra and other states also.
